Thinking about adding to your fur babies family?

Step 1: Read the title again.

Step 2: Book an appointment at your local shelter.

Step 3: Find the fur baby of your dreams.

Step 4: Read the steps again.

If you read my last post, you know that I am clearly passionate about animals. About a month ago I applied to be a volunteer at my local animal shelter ( Shout-out to LAWS, Smiths Falls ON.)

If you live in the Smiths Falls area, you can book a visit through their website https://www.lanarkanimals.ca/ as with COVID19 most shelters are not taking drop ins. Right now there aren't any dogs, but there are many cats that are ready for adoption.

These are some of the cats that aren't ready for adoption at LAWS, as they are a little feral. Right now they are just a little nervous and don't like being near people. However, week after week they begin warming up, and becoming more comfortable. They are still super cute as they give me the death stare!

The reason I stress adoption over breeders is that there are so many animals that spend too long in shelters. Many owners are not fit or are unable to raise a cat or dog, and the animal ends up in the shelter way too often. Thankfully, Canada does not have kill shelters anymore. At LAWS, If there is no room in the Inn, they have connections with other shelters within a four hour radius which will take the extras. However in the US, there are still approximately 1.5 million animals (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats) in shelters that get euthanized due to overcrowding. https://www.aspca.org/animal-homelessness/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics According to CBC News, animals were getting transferred from US kill shelters to no-kill shelters in Canada. However, with COVID19 travel bans, it is highly unlikely that this is still happening.

One upside of COVID19 is that people have become more apt to adopt. Especially while in lock-down, people tend to feel the need for companionship.

This was within the first lock-down (two month period) alone. So, adoptions are becoming more common. However, there is still a large amount of adoptions that are from breeders.

Every animal deserves a loving, caring home. As much as it is nice that we have shelters for them to go to, it is unfair for them to have to live their lives in a shelter.

If you love animals, but are unable to adopt at this time, you should look into volunteering at your local shelter. Or even contact them if you have any blankets, towels, food, treats, or pet dishes, as they can always use more! It is also important to donate to the shelters if you are able to, as they are non-profit organizations that typically run from the donations they receive.

If you haven't watched Earthlings yet as per my previous post, you really should if you're considering adopting an animal. There is a segment about shelter animals.

The sun was shining this morning, then the weather dropped and it is now snowing again, welcome to Canada, and climate change. Make sure to bundle yourself up and stay warm!

Well that's what's been on my mind today folks. I also think that this is a topic that doesn't appear in the news often enough. I just got home from work and I'm back to work in the morning (In 7 hours). So, I better catch some zzz's.

Me right now >

ANYWAY.

Thanks for reading humans.
